Animal updates
- Samuelle must have mange. Will figure it out.
- 6.13 Found Chickeweed the ram with his ear almost ripped off. Thought it was coyote strike at first. Now feel it was ripped somehow. Realy horrible. Penicillan shot and iodine is all I can do at this point.
- 6.12 Will post soon on the new hens. Oh my, they are growing. 2 months old. Free ranging now.
- 5.10 The Western Tanager made an appearance!
- 5.1 Samuelle is tendering up so well. His marshmellow feet are so far ulcer free.
- 5.1 I guess we all know the rooster came to stay and his name is Lyndon Baines.
- 5.1 The chicks are feathered out enough to hang outside most of the day. This week they have graduated to Flight 201.
- 3.25 On my walk with Huck today, found a stray Rhode Island Red rooster on a country road. I went back later to try and entice him, but he wouldn't budge. He was about 2000 feet from the nearest barn, so hoping he went back.
- 3.16 Two more weeks and the chicks arrive! Yes, we're adding 10 hens to the flock, and I'm getting three new breeds. Details to follw, as we will be chicken happy.
- 3.16 Well, we are all recovering over the loss of our head ewe, Rosie. Coral too was a leader in the field, making my herding tasks easier. I can tell Blue especially still bleets for Coral. And Daisy's Mom Rosie has been with her since day one. Nobody can tell me she doesn't feel the loss. But the herd will readjust. They move on fast, or they don't survive.
- 2.7 A beautiful downy woodpecker flew into my large 80" studio window this morning. I was so happy he was only stunned, and blinking. I snatched him up right away, brought him inside. His neck appeared fine. I soothed him, checked his wings, and he began to squeek like crazy! So many times the birds are dead on arrival, or a cat gets it before I do. I held him in the sun on my finger, and then within 10 minutes, he flew off. I was so pleased that something came to me to live, instead of to die this time.
- 1.21 I have the lambing schedule all ready. It means ewe supplemental feed and shots and more. Lambs are expected end of February into March.
- 12.31 I've named the new stray cat "Samuelle Noel" and hope to do a neuter in January.
- 12.16 Henny Jenny got stuck in the snow! We found her in about 6" and she couldn't move. Fortunately it was right at feeding time, so she's fine. I'll leave them in now until snow melts.
- 12.16 The new stray cat in the new barn has finally let all his pent up love out. After 2+ months of feeding him, he let me pet him, and hold him! He's a beauty. He must have been dumped, I knew he was yearning to be held, and he just needed time to trust us. I haven't come up with a name.
- 11.1 Ward the rooster slept in the Ward Room in a cardboard box. On the day he died, after I buried him, the donkeys took the carboard box and ripped it to shreds. I found that at first upsetting, but then comforting.

Malik was from a large shelter, and had trouble moving. He has severe arthritis in his spine and shoulders, and Horner's Syndrome which involves the cranial nerve. He's now eating well and gaining weight. He's on medication and chiro treatment and is enjoying life with his foster home.Old Dog Haven
Sammy is only 6 pounds and is 13-15 years old. He has to be taken out every 3 hours, and adores lap sitting. He is being pampered in his Final Refuge Home for as long as he has left. Look at that face!Old Dog Haven
Hunter is a 12 year old lab who has a hind leg not working well, and moves slowly. He had a long term bladder infection that caused lasting damage. He's getting lots of love and gets to live in the country now.Old Dog Haven
Molly is one of the many goats up at New Moon Farm , the goat rescue operated by Ellen Felsenthal. It's where we adopted old man Guinnias. I hope to help anytime I can.

- Apifera Farm
- Apifera Farm is located 30 miles west of Portland, Oregon and is the home of artist Katherine Dunn. Nestled near the coastal range and surrounded by farm and vineyard land, the farm is also home to sheep, Pino Blangiforti the apron and pie loving donkey, as well as many other critters. Martyn Dunn is a horticulturist and operates his own landscape design service, and Katherine is a nationally recognized artist/illustrator. Together they moved to Apifera Farm in 2004, and set out to create a place they can call home, grow as much of their own food as possible and be good stewards to a neglected farm. As a child, the artist traveled yearly to her Uncle's horse farm in North Dakota. She anticipated the smells, the animals, the space and the sound of the gravel road as they drove up to the barns. It took her 45+ years to get her farm, and a good partner in crime, not to mention a horse. She hopes her stories on her blog will inspire others to hold onto their dreams of having a farm.
